I was hit by someone insured by this company. I hadn’t heard of them
and neither has my mechanic.

Non-standard carriers are carriers that specialize in higher risk drivers (young drivers, odten-ticketed drivers, etc). You don’t hear about them as much, because they have insurance agencies sell for them. For example, Anchor General will offer an insurance agency a commission to sell their company to the public. They, in turn, will sell Anchor General to the public. This is how smaller insurance companies save on advertisement.
Companies like AAA, Allstate, Farmers, Geico, State Farm, etc are known as preferred carriers. They specialize in low-risk drivers, and offer low rates and extra discounts to good drivers.
Sometimes company names are irrelevant in claims. I’ve had clients tell me some of the preferred carriers are bad with claims. It’s really about the adjuster you deal with.
