What can one expect to pay for renters insurance is Los Angeles?

My daughter is moving to LA in a couple months and we are trying to estimate her expenses. Considering LA is in an earthquake zone, I have no idea what renters insurance for about $20,000 of property would cost a month. Also, does standard renters insurance cover earthquake damage or do you have to get an additional policy/rider for that?

$20K is about the minimum for renter’s insurance with any company. Make sure there’s liability too in case someone gets injured on her property. List anything expensive like computers or art on a rider. Get the earthquake rider. I used to be an insurance agent and also have renter’s insurance here in northern CA. I’m guessing it’ll be $300 a year at the most, if not less.

Unfortunately, we’re travel advisors, not insurance or rental agents. I can tell you that I pay about $50 per month for homeowner’s insurance (payable in a lump sum each year), which does not include earthquake insurance. That would be about another $50 per month, and carries a 10% deductible.

If your daughter is renting out here and there is a huge earthquake, “stuff” is the least of your worries.
