Lisa will explain Citizens homeowners insurance in Florida and how it compares to private insurance companies. Citizens homeowners insurance can not deny anyone in Florida but is largely a last resort insurer. Independent agents and brokers can offer more options if you are purchasing a home or changing insurance companies because of dropped coverage or increased premiums. Premiums can be reduced by increasing deductibles. For damages caused by anything other than a hurricane, such as a pipe breaking or roof collapse, there is the all other peril deductible, which can be set at $500, $1000 or $2500. Hurricane deductibles are set at 2%, 5% and 10% of the dwelling amount. There are also discounts available for homes with storm shutters, roof mitigation certificates, alarm systems, homes in gated communities and condos with central sprinkler systems.

Demographics and target markets of LTC: The advisor needs to own what he/she sells, so carrying a policy is step one in closing the client. Advisors may receive an agent discount as well their traditional compensation. The average age of LTC policy is 57. Younger business owners with parents should consider purchasing LTC to avoid future costs and guarantee assisted care. The AARP Nation starts at age 50, senior discounts start at age 55…both great demographics for LTC. Many carrier proposals illustrate the cost of waiting to purchase LTC. Some policies make sense to purchase a limited pay like ten pay for younger clients. Proposals should show ten pay and continual pay. LTC is omitted in retirement and estate planning, exposing the advisor to an E&O claim.

Six Activities of Daily Living (ADL) is a universal check list to measure the initiation of a claim. The inability to perform two out of six ADLs 90 days or longer triggers a claim. LTC is predominately reimbursement but some are cash indemnification policies. Vacations for the care giver are provided by the Respite Care provision in the LTC policy that includes a licensed practitioner that substitute for the regular care giver. Survivor benefits: After the 11th year of the policy and one spouse died the other policy is paid up. Shared care riders create a bridge between married couples individual polices that allow access to the others policy benefits if the first policy benefits are exhausted or unused benefits for the survivor.
